Home Office spends £5.77M PER DAY on asylum hotels

The House of Commons Library puts Home Office spending on asylum hotel accommodation at £2.1 billion in 2024/25, which works out at £5.77 million per day. That sits inside £4 billion spent on asylum support altogether.

It is falling. Hotel spending is down 17 per cent on 2023/24, when it ran at £3 billion, or £8.3 million a day.

The National Audit Office has not published a per-day figure. Its own reporting covers the accommodation contracts, where hotels accounted for around 76 per cent of the cost in the first seven months of 2024-25, £1.3 billion of an estimated £1.7 billion. Annualised, that is consistent with the Commons Library total.

30,657 people housed in hotel accommodation as at 31 December 2025, which is 28.7% of all asylum support.

Meanwhile, 64,426 people are still waiting for an initial decision on their asylum claim. The backlog is the cost driver. Every day of delay is another day of hotel bills charged to YOU.

The 10-year asylum accommodation contract is forecast at £15.3 billion.
